“Saeva Dupka” cave

Пещера в Болгарии

In 90 km from Sofia, we found a strange sign – “Saeva Dupka” (literally “Saeva Hole”). The name seemed to be quite strange for the sight, so we decided to find out what it is. We aimed in the direction of sign. The second poster unveiled the truth: it was a cave!

Cave sign

The name of this cave takes its origin from a legend. The legend tells us about two brothers: Sye and Seu. They discovered this cave while hiding from Turkish conquerors.

In 1962 the cave was excavated and reconstructed.

Would you like to play some organ music?

Natural organ

It really makes a sound. And the sound tone depends on the “tube” length.

We have already told you about two Georgian rainbow-colored caves: Prometheus cave and Sataplia cave.
This cave is lighted with natural light and is beautiful with its natural colours.

Saeva Dupka cave is not flat. It’s height is always changing!

The “Saeva Dupka” cave is one of the most beautiful caves in the world! If you are travelling in Bulgaria, you should certainly visit it!

The bats living in this cave are protected by Bulgarian laws. And they are sleeping in November.

One of them was awake, but we couldn’t catch it on camera.

One more interesting fact is that the cave was slightly damaged by an earthquake. It caused falling of stalactites and cracks on big stalagnats.

Some more weird formations created by stalactites, stalagmites and stalagnats…

Can you imagine: the highest stalactite in this cave has 60 meters in perimeter!
