Zarzma Church (Transfiguration Monastery)

While travelling around Adjara, you can find lots of beautiful places and sights. Zarzma Church is one of the sights located near Transadjarian Road connecting Batumi and Akhaltsikhe.

Zarzma Church (also known as Transfiguration Monastery) was built in 1045. Since 16th century (the period when Georgia was invaded by Ottomans) the church was destroyed and abandoned till the 19th century, when it was repaired and renovated.

The church is one of the well-preserved churches of Georgia. Its belltower tends to be the largest belltower in the country!

The territory of the church is kept in a very good condition. Crosses, fountains, stone-paved roads, grape vines…

The place is calm and peaceful inside and outside!

The frescoes dated by 14th century are well-preserved too. Of course some of them were damaged during the ottoman occupation or even during the restoration in early 20th century when damaged frescoes were removed and replaced with new ones.

There are lots of ancient signs and inscriptions on the church’s walls.
