“Sveti duh” Fortress. Bulgaria

Часовня в крепости Свети духа. Болгария

Our route has changed in less then one day before entering Bulgaria. Initially, this country was not on the list. So at the first day of our we didn’t have much sightseeings marked on our map. Finally we could find a “point of interest” with an attractive name “Bulgarian Lion”, and we aimed to that point.

Our way lied through the Mineralni Bani (literally “Mineral Baths”) town, where we noticed a fortress sign.

Parking was empty. Tourist information point too…

Here are the fortress walls. They are dated by the 2nd century AD.

Fortress walls

The fortress consisted of the four towers and numerous living quarters, warehouses and barracks, lord’s house and water storage. The process of building of its different parts lasted as long as four historical periods: Roman, Late Roman, Early Byzanthian and Medieval (2nd – 11th centuries AD).

Several “pitosi” were found during the excavations. These are clay-made pots for food storage. These pots prove the existing of settlements here in 11th century.

Nowadays there is a small chapel among the ruins.
