Gonio-Apsaross Fortress

Крепость Гонио. Грузия.

Gonio-Apsaross Fortress is one of the sightseeings that can be visited during your stay in Batumi. It is located near the city, not far from Turkish border.

In ancient times, the fortress was a Roman fortification in Ajaria. The first mentioning is dated by the first century a.d.

The territory of Gonio city includes a theater and a horse race track. It is considered that there could be a tomb of one of the twelve apostles, Saint Mathias. But it is not possible to find any proofs, because Georgian government doesn’t allow any digging around that gravesite.

The fortress is located at the sea side. And many people believe that this shore is much more ecologically clean then Batumi Beach. So there are lots of tourists coming here in summer, and many of them are from Tbilisi.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t get inside the fortress. During “low” season, the fortress is closed. There is a phone number on the entrance door. But on our first day we were too late and the guy on the phone didn’t wish to come to us. On another day we had no time for waiting, so we decided to come here back again.

But we were lucky to find police Mini in the neighbourhood 🙂
