One of the most famous mountains in Tbilisi is Mtatsminda mount. The name can be translated as “holy mount”. Most of tourists do not know that the mount has another name – Saint David’s mount.

Let’s climb this hill!

In 6th century, two years after Saint Nino brought christianity into Georgia, 13 monks came to this place. They aimed to popularise christianity among Iberian people (ancient Georgians). Saint David was one of those monks. He chose Tbilisi to be his home. David built a cave and a chapel on Mtatsminda mount.

Later, Mamadaviti church was built instead of that chapel. “Mamadaviti” can be translated as “father David”. Unfortunately this church didn’t survive and in late 19th century a new church was built on that place (farther building on the photo).
