Azerbaijan’s sightseeings

Башня Раманы.

We already mentioned Gobustan Rock Arts and the Old City. Here we will tell you about other interesting places that we visited on our way.

Mud Volcanoes

There is a very interesting place in Azerbaijan – Mud Volcanoes of Gobustan National Park (yes, that one with rock arts).

Gobustan National Park

These mud volcanoes are well known. There are about 800 mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan (more then anywhere in the World). These volcanoes are quite funny. A hill looking like a real volcano, with a liquid mud on the top that gurgles from time to time 🙂

Some people say that the volcano valley looks like Mars surface. We saw it in the night and can confirm – it is really so! It is really Mars with two rovers (our cars) on its surface!

The mud is not just a warm gurgling slush (eugh… I’ve touched it 🙂 ). Some people try to use it in cosmetic or mud therapy purposes!

And of cause, we couldn’t hold our cars away from drowning in the mud. Brave Suzuki Grand Vitara stuck there for couple funny photoes 🙂

We could see quite a beautiful view of the sea shore in the morning, but we visited that place in the late evening. So we should try to come back and take a picture of this place in a day light!

Burning Mountain (Yanar Dag)

GPS coordinates for Garmin/Navitel: N40.501861, E49.89125

Burning Mountain (Yanar Dag, Yanar Dağ) is another sightseeing of Azerbaijan. This mountain (actually a hill) is burning since ancient times. The cause of the fire is a natural gas that emanates from vents in sandstone formations forming the base of the hill. Actually places like this are quite rare in the World.

These flames are burning since ancient times. Even Marko Polo, italian adventurer and historical writer, mentioned this place in his scripts in 13th century.

Flames are really magnifying. We visited this place in winter, so it was not only beautiful, but also warming enough 🙂

Ramany Tower

GPS coordinates for Garmin/Navitel: N40.456111, E49.98

The tower is located in Ramany village near Baku. For me, this building seems to be quite strange (too small), but I suppose it is a very good fortification for covering small number of people.

This tower was built in 14th century. You can get inside. The key from gates is located in a house nearby – you just need to ask 🙂 After getting inside you can not only get to the wall and tower internal floors, but also get to the top of the tower. But I’d rather recommend you to stay away from the top 🙂 Getting there is quite dangerous. The way goes along a shaky rusty piece of pipe. Moreover, it is quite easy to get up, but quite hard to get down!
